Connection between houses
Connection between houses

A connection between residences in Holland. New materials strengthen the old ones

The architects of Mei Architects and Planners connect the upper floor of a historic building on Lange Nieuwstraat in Schiedam with a monumental warehouse purchased by the same client Van Stigt Thans

The client asked the Mei Architects and Planners Studio to build a connecting bridge. The challenge is complex because of the difficulty of bridging the difference in level, the technical requirements for connection and the need for privacy

The project proposal was immediately welcomed with enthusiasm by the municipal commission for the new building permits required for historic and monumental buildings, precisely because Mei has clearly articulated the extension, presenting it as a new architectural stratification of the time

The solution adopted did not involve repeating a new glass connection but proposed a white 'cloud'. The new bridge, a self-supporting steel and glass structure, is located in front of the white perforated steel panels. The abstract 3D motifs, which are a reference to the original cast iron ornaments on the building's balconies are refined and incorporated into the panels by means of rubber presses

In order to ensure the privacy of the occupants, what happens inside cannot be seen from the outside, but the occupants enjoy the view surrounding the building

The bridge can be dismantled to permit future owners to remove it if they so wish. The warehouse can also be restored to its original state, because the openings made in the facade to accommodate the bridge have the same proportions as the frames of the original windows

The architects of Mei Architects and Planners have succeeded in strengthening the value of both buildings while respecting and preserving their existing identity
