Stone base and pink dwelling
Stone base and pink dwelling

An old barn is transformed into two guesthouses. History and contemporaneity in harmony

The "pink house", designed by Mezzo Atelier studio and located on the Atlantic island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, maintains the character and rural atmosphere of the early 20th century barn while creating space for a contemporary addition

A new volume is added to the main building, with coloured facades which contrast with the existing stone wall. The larger house consists of the ground floor, which opens onto the outdoor spaces and an upper floor with an open floor layout

Elements such as the external stairs connecting with the outdoor terrace or the use of bleached wood in the interiors are a reinterpretation of the vernacular architecture of the Azores. The pink and ochre tones that characterise the building are the main identity of the area in which the building stands

Ochre, originally used to frame doors and windows is now used in the interior. The interiors and custom-made furniture are designed to create a neutral and tranquil atmosphere, so that the view of the outdoor spaces and the garden predominates over the interior spaces
