Renovation of an apartment in Valencia. Contemporary spaces and historical continuity

Inside a historic building in the heart of Valencia, the architect Roberto Di Donato completes the renovation of an apartment that remained in a state of total dereliction for a long time before been purchased by its new owners

At the time of purchase, the apartment is an empty enclosure that gave way to numerous challenges and creative opportunities. The approach to the project is guided by the ambition to create a space suitable for contemporary living, designing distinct environments that allow for a fluid dynamism without affecting the existing structure

The depth of the spaces is emphasized by the insertion of new and unusual partition walls. The space flows constantly from one area to the other, and the separation between the sleeping and living areas is underlined by two imposing wooden elements made to measure, that perform a dual function: to accommodate the wardrobes of the bedroom and allow you to alter the privacy between the bedroom and the living room

Another key element is the height of the ceiling. The roof structure is restructured and kept fully visible. No element of the new restyling comes into contact with the roof, demonstrating the deep respect for the past of the building and thus allowing for the full perception of the spaces and volumes of the apartment

All the elements of the new design have been inserted with a clear and precise direction inside the space. The wooden cabinets, white full-height curtains and large staircase accentuate the verticality of the space, while the long kitchen worktop and plasterboard with its long line of lights emphasize its horizontal dimension

With the creation of a few essential elements, the new restyling introduces a contemporary language to the design of the apartment, without distorting its original layout, but emphasizing its character and materiality. The signs of the past are not erased, but arranged and kept visible with a sense of continuity with the history of the building
