Full professor of architectural and urban design at IUAV in Venice, in 1997 Carmassi founded the Carmassi Architettura studio in Florence with Gabriella Ioli. He has taught in many Italian universities, in Berlin and in New York. From 1981 to 1985 he was president of the Order of Architects of Pisa. Among the numerous awards received there is also the H. Tessenow Gold Medal of the Schumacher Foundation
